ABOUT CLIFF KINCHEN
He doesn't teach

leadership theory.

He teaches what he lived.

"Most leaders confuse authority with leadership. They have people who comply — not people who commit."

Cliff Kinchen built his foundation over two decades of leadership in the United States Air Force — not as a title, but as a proving ground. Serving as a Law Enforcement Supervisor, Defensive Tactics and Firearms Instructor, and Air Base Ground Defense Instructor, he didn't simply fill these roles — he elevated them, shaping the standards others were measured against.

That same commitment carried into his role as Superintendent and Acting Director of Education at one of the Air Force's largest Non-Commissioned Officer Academies, where he developed over 1,200 military and civilian leaders every year. His impact earned him recognition as Senior NCO of the Year for Air Education and Training Command — selected from a field of nearly 8,000 eligible Senior NCOs across the largest command in the U.S. Air Force. He was also his command's nominee for the 12 Outstanding Airmen of the Year — the Air Force's most prestigious enlisted recognition program.

Running parallel to his military career, Cliff pursued martial arts not just as a physical discipline, but as a study of mindset, resilience, and leadership rooted in decades of tradition. That path led him to earn an 8th-Degree Black Belt, claim the Joe Lewis Fighting Systems U.S. Light Heavyweight Title, and win the International Fighters Association North American Super Middleweight Title — distinctions that reflect not only technical mastery but the mental discipline and strategic precision that define his approach to leadership.

Today, Cliff brings both worlds together through The Kinchen Standard — a seven-pillar leadership framework he developed from the ground up, drawn from thirty years of military service, martial arts, and frontline leadership under real pressure. He works with organizations, teams, and individuals who are ready to stop managing people and start leading them.

THE FRAMEWORK

The Kinchen Standard™

Seven Pillars of Leadership

A framework built from decades of real pressure — military service, martial arts, and frontline leadership. Not theory. Not borrowed ideas. A system that works because it was lived.

A

FOUNDATION LAYER

Lead Yourself First

The internal work that makes external leadership possible. Discipline, emotional control, and self-awareness before any outward leadership is possible.

B

FOUNDATION LAYER

Resilience Is a System, Not a Trait

How you build the capacity to absorb, recover, and lead forward. Resilience is built before it is needed — not when the pressure arrives.

1

PRACTICE LAYER

Don't Quote the Standard. Be the Standard.

Authority makes people comply. Example makes people commit. The standard is what people experience from you.

2

PRACTICE LAYER

Integrity Under Pressure

Doing what's right when it's hardest and most costly. Judgment over rules. Character over convenience.

3

PRACTICE LAYER

Earn the Right to Be Followed

Followership is never owed. It is earned through competence, character, and consistency over time.

4

PRACTICE LAYER

Culture Speaks When You Don't

What you tolerate, you endorse. Culture is always communicating — even when you aren't.

5

PRACTICE LAYER

Train 'Em So Well They Don't Need You

The true measure of a leader is what continues in their absence. Leadership is multiplication, not control.

The framework is the foundation of every workshop, training engagement, consulting relationship, and speaking engagement.

THE BOOK

Resilient Warrior

Be the Standard

The principles behind The Kinchen Standard didn't start in a boardroom or a consulting firm. They were forged on the streets of Detroit, through 20 years of military service, martial arts mastery, and frontline leadership. Resilient Warrior is the story of how adversity, discipline, and an unrelenting standard built a leader — and the foundation of everything Cliff teaches today.

The Standard in Practice

Tom Brocksmith

Vice President, Catastrophe Operations  |  Crawford & Company

A senior operating executive who has known Cliff for 35 years

"I've been fortunate to know and be a friend of Cliff's for over 35 years. We met in our early 20's in a dojo in the deep south. Neither of us had roots there and we came from completely different worlds. I was raised a "military brat" with both parents hard working and stable. Cliff came from Detroit with quite an opposing upbringing, which I encourage one to read about in his leadership book. Yet we hit it off (oddly, due to our different pasts), and it seems we could read each other's thoughts; not literally, but then again kinda.

We had similar outlooks on life's vastly different subjects.

I've witnessed throughout our lives Cliff's ups and downs both personally and professionally.

His hardships never seemed to break him, and he has an innately resilient way about handling them. Yet they came nonetheless. And he grew wiser and more resilient, determined to not only not be stopped by them but improved and adapted.

I can recall having doubts in myself during our younger years in various subjects, one being my skills developed in martial arts and kickboxing, then looking to him and seeing and feeling his confidence and being inspired to continue. Honestly, now as I write this I know I would not have pursued some challenges had it not been for his strength. Guess that's a benefit of a friend like Cliff. Something I've never shared with him until now.

I've witnessed him be knocked down figuratively and literally many times, without hesitation just getting back up.

It's not always about how and if one gets back up as much as it is as to how one continues.

Cliff is special in this regard, as he takes the subject, transmutes it, and applies the result to his path, including his teaching in martial arts as well as his career in the Air Force, enhancing many lives.

He's now taking the results of his skills to leadership, which I'm confident will continue to not only enhance lives but do it on a much broader spectrum than just his dojo.

I would encourage anyone contemplating using his leadership skills to do so, and do so immediately.

Read his book, let your children read his book, tell your family and friends about it too."

Chief Philip Geiger

Chief of Police  |  Davidson Police Department

On behalf of the Davidson Police Department

"The Davidson Police Department values training that is both practical and relevant to the realities our officers face, and Cliff Kinchen's defensive tactics program delivered on both fronts. His engaged and progressive teaching style resonated with our personnel, building confidence, competence, and skill across all experience levels, from newer officers to seasoned professionals.

Cliff's approach stood out in its intentional design. The techniques he presented were grounded in trusted and proven methodology, while also incorporating tactics widely recognized as best practice in modern law enforcement. Equally important, he took the time to align the training with our department's policies and operational environment, ensuring the material was not only effective but immediately applicable.

We observed strong engagement throughout the sessions, with officers responding positively to the clarity of instruction and the way concepts were broken down and reinforced through practical application. That level of preparation is critical. It directly contributes to officer safety, supports better decision-making in the field, and ultimately leads to more successful outcomes for the community we serve.

For any agency considering this type of training, we would strongly recommend Cliff Kinchen. His commitment to thoughtful, tailored instruction makes a meaningful impact on both individual officers and organizational performance."

Steven Rizer

Senior Platform Engineer  |  Executive Coaching Client

Executive coaching client — career clarity, decision-making, and leadership under pressure

"When I walked into Cliff's dojo I was carrying a lot I had not really looked at. Pressure at work, financial stress, and grief I had not processed yet. I started training one month before I lost someone close to me, and I did not realize until later that something had pointed me to that dojo right before the floor dropped out.

What changed under Cliff's instruction is not the weight. Life still piles on. What changed is how I stand under it. He teaches you to hold your center. When something hits, you do not lean back and scramble. You stay rooted, take what you can, redirect what you cannot, and come back to center. I use that off the mat far more than I use it on it. I do not scramble anymore. I plant my feet and deal with what is actually in front of me.

A lot of those decisions went through conversations with Cliff after class. He never told me what to do, and that is the part most people would not expect from someone with his background. He has every reason to hand out orders. He doesn't. He asks the right questions, makes sure I am looking at the full picture, and lets me come to my own conclusion. He helped me get clear on career moves I had been sitting on for too long, and on financial decisions I had been avoiding because they felt too big to look at directly. I make decisions cleaner now, and I follow through on them. That is on him."

Caitlin "CQ" Quinn

Director  |  Toyota Performance Center

NASCAR performance director — character and leadership development for drivers and staff

"I found Cliff on a whim and quickly learned I had stumbled onto a valuable asset to the Toyota Performance Center. It was easy to build his MMA sessions into our program because of what I watched happen in our drivers, and honestly in myself. He teaches martial arts as tradition and real-world skill, and he never lets you forget the responsibility that comes with it.

What transfers is a quiet, unshakeable confidence — the kind that settles you, especially when preparing for battle, or in our case, competition. I believe this comes from who Cliff is. His lived experience shows up as a steady, tough, deeply admirable presence, and he's someone I trust to develop character in our drivers."
